Mayor London Breed And The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Roll-Out The "Slow Streets" Plan:
On Tuesday, April 21, Mayor London N. Breed and San Francisco Municipal Transportation (SFMTA) Director Jeffrey Tumlin announced a new program -- "Slow Streets".Â
Slow Streets is meant to limit traffic on select streets and is in response to COVID-19. Specifically, as the shelter-in-place order is still in effect many San Franciscans are walking or taking other modes of transportation to both exercise and make essential trips. The goal of the program is to reduce and slow vehicle traffic and to support safe physical activity by making the streets available to the public, thus, creating more space for physical distancing.Â
The slowed-down streets set for temporary closure are:Â
-17th Street (between Noe and Valencia)
-20th Avenue (between Lincoln and Ortega)
??????
-22nd Street (between Valencia and Chattanooga)
-41st Avenue (between Lincoln and Vicente)
???????
-Ellis (between Polk and Leavenworth)
??????
-Holloway (between J Serra and Harold)
???????
-Kirkham (between Great Highway and Seventh Avenue)
???????
-Phelps (between Oakdale and Evans)
???????
-Ortega (between Great Highway and 14th Avenue
????
-Page (between Stanyan and Octavia)
-Quesada (between Lane and Fitch)
-Scott (between Eddy and Page)
Slow Streets implementation started this week with two to three corridors per week expected to be implemented on a weekly basis until all of the seventeen (17) announced are in effect.Â

Why Is This Needed: Because the new City guidelines mandate that everyone should be wearing a face mask while they are out and about conducting essential businesses.
