California Governor Gavin Newsom Gives COVID-19 Update
Today, August 10, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom gave an update on COVID-19 in the state, below a summary for your convenience.
Evictions:
The Governor noted that, currently, only 80 cities (of the 470+) and 10 counties (of 58), totaling 50% of Californians, are jurisdictions with local eviction moratoriums in place. However, he noted that that is not enough and that he is working with our legislative branch to "collaboratively" find a solution since three-quarters of all of Californian renters have fallen behind on rent payment.
Philanthropic Partnership:
The Governor also announced two new philanthropic projects happening in California, those are:
(1) Kaiser Permanente: Kaiser Permanente will provide $63 million in grant funding that will aid community-based support in California meant to address contact tracing, isolation, and existing quarantine efforts.
(2) The Governor also announced that $18.8 million from "philanthropic partners" was being provided to the state and that those monies was to "support local public health efforts", the D11 office will provide more details as they become available.
COVID-19 Statewide Updated Numbers:
As of August 9, 2020 (with numbers based as of Saturday, August 8, 2020), California had:
(1) A total of 561,911 new cases (+1.4% increase);
(2) 10,359 (+0.6%) total deaths (fatalities), the Governor also announced that California had now conducted 8,998,353 COVID-19 tests (“diagnostic tests”), which is an increase of 172,234 tests since this Saturday;
(3) 5,636 confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations and 1,731 in the ICU;
(4) 1,213 suspected of COVID-19 hospitalizations and 160 in the ICU;
(5) The positivity rate, rate of positive tests, over the last 14 days is 6.0 percent;
(6) Disturbingly, of all of the COVID-19 cases confirmed so far in California, 60% of those positive cases have been in the Latinx community and 4.3% in the Black community;
(7) San Francisco has 6,820 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

San Francisco’s Sunday Streets Program Cancelled For The Remainder Of The Year (2020) But Street Openings Launched In The Alternative Throughout The City And The Excelsior Has Been Selected For One Of Those Street Openings
On Friday, August 7, 2020, the Board of Supervisors received noticed that Livable City was cancelling the remainder of all previously planned Sunday Streets events for the remainder of the 2020 calendar year due to COVID-19. However, the Program will be directing the remaining sources available to create a series of regularly occurring street closures in neighborhoods that are in need of more open space and have historic need for economic development resources. For example, the launch of these street openings already took place in Chinatown and in the works is the Excelsior neighborhood. Stay tuned!
What is the Sunday Streets Program?
It is an open streets program based on a program that originated in Ciclovia, Bogota and that allows for the closure of streets so that people can engage in fun and free activities.

Summary Of Update Provided By San Francisco Sheriff Paul Miyamoto
San Francisco Sheriff Paul Miyamoto issued his monthly update to everyone via a video, he informed us that the City and County of San Francisco experienced a surge, overall, in COVID-19 positive cases in the month of July and that that increase in new cases was also reflected in the Sheriff’s Department.
Specifically, Sheriff Paul Miyamoto stated that staff have tested positive, he noted that these employees contracted the coronavirus outside of work and that appropriate steps had been taken to ensure that everyone was safe and healthy.
As of today, 11 employees at the Sheriff’s Department tested positive for COVID-19 and, as of the date of the video, 30 individuals “in the system” tested positive so far and of those 30 only 3 are still currently positive.

Mayor London Breed Announces $3.1 Million In Grants For Nonprofit Organizations
Today, Mayor London Breed, the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD), the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, the San Francisco Arts Commission, and Community Vision announced $3.1 million in awards for nonprofit space acquisition and lease stabilization, including $2.15 million in vital support for Latino-led organizations expanding their space and services at new affordable housing sites in the Mission District.
Background: The grants are part of San Francisco’s Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative (NSI), which deploys financial assistance, professional services, assessment tools and other resources to help stabilize nonprofits, and are vital to providing and supporting residents including low-income families and children with social and mental health services as part of the response to COVID-19 and beyond.

Free Covid-19 Testing Every Friday In District 11 At 50 Broad Street From 10AM-6PM
This past Friday (August 7, 2020), the District 11 office announced that COLOR would be offering free COVID-19 at 50 Broad on Fridays from 10am-6pm and we are happy to report that the kick-off was a success! Details below.
Specifically, at this past Friday's kick-off over 200 individuals were tested for COVID-19, that's very good news! Lastly, please note that services and resources are available on-site and you should also feel free to share this information with your neighbors so all community members in District 11 can have access to low-barrier testing.
The District 11 office would like to thank the Department of Public Health, COLOR, EJ Jones with IT Bookman (for organizing the community), and all of the leaders from Lakeview who worked to make this not only a reality but a success. Thank you!
