On Friday, October 23, 2020, Mayor London Breed announced the creation of a new Community Liaison Unit at the San Francisco Police Department (“S.F.P.D.”). This unit is a team of five dedicated officers from the Police Department’s Community Engagement Division that will be focused on supporting the community’s public safety needs and ensuring that all of our communities not only feel safe but also feel comfortable working and collaborating with our Police Department. These officers will support San Francisco’s Community Liaison Officers at each of the existing ten S.F.P.D. district stations by serving as intermediaries or liaisons with the community, the District’s Attorney Office, and the Media Relations Unit to not only improve the flow of communication on the status of cases but also keep victims informed.
This new Unit was created in response to increased reports of violence against Asian and Pacific Islander residents in San Francisco. Specifically, these five officers in the Community Liaison Unit will regularly attend community meetings throughout the City with an emphasis on building an earning trustful relationships with the community and also by making themselves visible and available to all. They will also partner with nonprofit agencies, across neighborhoods, that address hate crimes and prejudice-based incidents, this is a win for all San Franciscans!
Supervisor Safai wanted to note in today’s newsletter that this announcement from the Mayor’s Office is in-line with his work and efforts to find funding so that City resources could be used in a targeted matter within the Asian community so that everyone in District 11 feels safe, supported, and valued.

COVID-19 Update: City and County of San Francisco and California
A. San Francisco COVID-19 Update
On Tuesday, October 20, 2020, Mayor London Breed announced that San Francisco would be moving forward with its reopening plans as it was moved to the yellow tier of the State’s COVID-19 re-opening plan, the least restrictive. What does that mean (yellow tier)? It means that San Francisco will be allowed to reopen many businesses and also be able to resume more activities, such as, not an exhaustive list: indoor gyms may reopen, fitness centers and institutions of higher education will now be allowed to increase their capacity, and non-essential offices will also now be able to reopen at limited capacity.
San Francisco is the first in the Bay Area to be placed in the yellow tier and also the first urban area in all of California to do so.
B. California COVID-19 Update
This week, California Governor Gavin Newsom disclosed the guidelines for theme parks and amusement parks so they can re-open in counties that are in the orange tier at 25% capacity and only to in-county visitors. Larger parks may only re-open if they are in the yellow tier and, again, at 25% capacity for counties in the yellow tier.
To read the guidelines, please click here:

As a refresher, there are four tiers: yellow, orange, red, and purple. Yellow indicates minimal COVID-19 spread, least restrictive, while purple represents widespread COVID-19 transmission, most restrictive. Please continue to be safe!
