Working with City Departments to Keep the Richmond Clean and Safe
Pedestrian Safety Walk Survey
Last week, I joined with with our senior residents, Self Help for the Elderly, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (SFMTA), and the San Francisco Bike Coalition for a Community Walk Audit where we walked along Geary Boulevard to advance pedestrian safety and accessibility, discussing areas of needed improvement on the sidewalks and curbs to be fixed as well as ensuring that cross walks and pedestiran countdown signals allowed the seniors to safely cross the street.
Cleaning up the Streets
San Francisco Public Works was out on Balboa Street between 34th and 45th Avenues cleaning up the area with me and my team last week. We highlighted hot spot areas and connected with merchants to help ensure we keep the street clean, safe and welcoming to residents and visitors. The department rotates around the city each week and will be back in our district on the Geary corridor (from Arguello to Park Presidio) in March. Let us know if there are particular areas that you think need attention and we'll work to get a team out there.

Mayor’s Plan on Upzoning the Richmond
Last month we sent out a survey conducted by the San Francisco Planning Department to gather community feedback on the Mayor's proposed one-size-fits-all upzoning plan for the Richmond. We heard from many of you about your concerns on what this upzoning will do to the Richmond, a majority tenant district that relies heavily on our small businesses. Now that the survey has closed, Planning will review the results and present their plan to the Board of Supervisors. You can read more about the plan and see the street-by-street maps by clicking on the map below.
In addition to my concerns about the small business and tenant displacement that will likely occur under the Mayor's upzoning plan, I also am concerned with a new state law passed by Senator Scott Wiener which would single San Francisco out for penalties for not meeting the goal of 82,000 new units by 2031. And we need to continue to build more affordable housing that San Francisco desperately needs, this law ignores the economic realities of market driven housing development. The City's own records show that San Francisco currently has 70,000 housing units approved for development, and over 60,000 empty units available for rent. Clearly, what we need are resources to boost the production of housing units already approved, and funding for affordable housing to meet the mandate.
This is why, last month, Board President Aaron Peskin and I jointly sent a letter to City Attorney David Chui to ask him to review the law and provide advice on our legal options to defend our tenants, small businesses, and homeowners against displacement. You can read about our letter below.
Thank you to everyone who submitted a response to our survey on how we should spend the Golden Gate Park Community Benefit Fund that we receive to offset the impacts caused by the Outside Lands concert series. As a district, we shoulder a lot during the festival and it's only right that we have some investment back into our neighborhood. We heard suggestions that ranged from community fairs, new exercise equipment at our parks, and cleaning up the streets among others.
We are going to be at the San Francisco Park, Recreation and Open Space Advisory Committee (PROSAC) meeting next month to present on our plans and hope to have the money working to benefit the community soon! The PROSAC meeting is open to the public and will be held on Tuesday, February 6th at 5pm in City Hall, Room 278 if you want to attend and give public comment.
