(L to R): Supervisor Connie Chan, Reverend Dr. Sakena Young-Scaggs, Roberto Hernandez, Reverend Dr. Carieta Cain-Grizzell, Reverend Martin F. Grizzell
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are staying safe and relatively dry. On Monday, I had the honor of joining my fellow city leaders and community advocates at the San Francisco Labor Party’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast. I was reminded of the great power we all hold to impact the world for the better, that we can all strive to be great. As Dr. King said, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.” As we begin this new session of the Board of Supervisors and move through 2023, I aim to do just that.
Health Updates & Resources
COVID-19
The SF Department of Public Health (DPH) continues to focus efforts on improving vaccination/booster rates given that this is the best way for individuals to protect themselves from the most severe health impacts of COVID-19, especially improving rates of the bivalent vaccine booster.
On December 21, 2022, the Health Officer updated the Health Order, primarily making minor changes to align with updated state and federal definitions of a few key terms. SFDPH also announced that the Alemany COVID-19 testing site will permanently close on January 31, 2023.
Cases of flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) have been leveling off or declining in San Francisco, following state and national trends, but remain high. San Franciscans are urged to continue to protect themselves and others, and especially young infants and older adults by taking the following actions:
Get your annual flu vaccine and bivalent (Omicron) COVID-19 booster as soon as possible if you haven’t already—it’s not too late. While there is currently no vaccine for RSV, being infected with more than one virus can increase the risk of severe disease.
Stay home when sick, and stay away from others who are sick.
Practice good hygiene: wash hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. The flu can spread on your skin, on surfaces, and in the air.
Contact a healthcare provider if you are not feeling well to discuss your symptoms and treatment options. Your insurance may offer online or phone visits with your doctor 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Patients with Medi-Cal have free phone visits with a doctor 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Keep a well-fitted mask on hand for crowded, indoor spaces (N95, KN95, KF94 are best).
Increase ventilation or air filtration when indoors if possible or gather outdoors.
Ask your provider in advance if you are someone who would benefit from treatment with a medicine for flu or for COVID-19, as these medicines must be started early.
Stock up on COVID-19 rapid test kits. Those with insurance are able to get at-home tests for free or be reimbursed.
District Updates

This month, I will begin my weekly office hours again. We will have both in person, in the district at Jackie Chan Senior Center, and virtual options on Friday afternoons. We also invite you to come to our open house on Tuesday, January 24 at 4:30 pm to celebrate the Lunar New Year and as we open up our office to the community. Join us for some festive food, drinks and music.
Honoring Richmond District Legends and Heroes
In December we honored Matilda Abbe, or lovingly known to her dance students, Miss Tilly, after her retirement from her ballet studio after over 50 years of teaching. Since 1970, Ms. Tilly has taught the children of San Francisco about ballet, movement and imagination in her studio at 17th and California.
She has inspired a lifelong love of performance and dance in students and gave countless children the confidence they need to thrive in life. We honor Miss Tilly for her service, her commitment to the art of dance, and perhaps most importantly, her commitment to the art of teaching and mentorship. I know many of you join me in wishing her a very relaxing, rewarding and well-deserved retirement.
Last week I joined San Francisco first responders to honor Mr. Lucas Moore, Ms. Monica Gomez, Mr. Griffen De Luce, for their selflessness, bravery, and their quick thinking which saved the life of a surfer at Ocean Beach on December 3, 2022. Lucas, Monica, and Griffen’s actions were nothing short of heroic - pulling the victim from the ocean and giving him life saving CPR until the medics arrived - and we are all lucky to have them in San Francisco. You can read more about the rescue here.
