It was wonderful to finally celebrate Lunar New Year in person with my colleagues this year.
As we all know, 2020 was the Year of the Rat, when the pandemic first broke out. 2021 was the Year of the Ox, when we stood our ground and united to fight back to end the pandemic. And now in 2022, the year of the Tiger, our local businesses, economy and communities will come roaring back with the ferociousness of the Tiger.
I hope everyone has a fierce and phenomenal Year of the Tiger!
Legislative Updates
Expanding Access to Family Friendly Workplaces
The pandemic has demonstrated that we can adapt our workplaces in ways that we hadn’t thought were possible and still keep services running. It will be critical to long term and equitable recovery to balance the needs of both our workers and our employers. This is a crucial moment to update this law to reflect our current dynamic demands. It’s no longer about whether we should have flexible schedules, it’s about how we make it work for both the employer and the employee.
First passed by the Board of Supervisors in 2014, the Family Friendly Workplace Ordinance gave employees the right to request flexible or predictable working arrangements to assist with caregiving responsibilities. I have proposed to expand and improve the program by:
Establishing an fair process for employees to work with employers in developing work arrangements
Mandating employers to provide flexible scheduling except in cases of undue hardship
Requiring employers to address the issue of teleworking employees
Expanding the definition of care to include elderly family members other than parents
Increasing penalties for violations to cover the cost of care
Exempting small businesses with fewer than 20 employees
Starting February 16, 2022, San Francisco will lift universal mask requirements for most indoor settings in alignment with the State. For certain settings, indoor masking is still required by the State for everyone regardless of vaccination status. Those settings are: public transportation; health care settings; congregate settings like correctional facilities and homeless shelters; long term care facilities; and in K-12 schools and child care settings.
People can continue to choose to wear face coverings around others whether it’s mandated or not and should respect people’s choices around their health.
San Francisco will continue to require proof of vaccinations or a negative test to enter restaurants, bars, gyms and other settings where food and drink is consumed. You can stay up to date on the City's COVID-19 policies here.
The Richmond Senior Center and Community Youth Center will continue to be able to assist you in finding a testing site or vaccine information. You can contact either organization below:
Today is District 1's redistricting meeting! Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the redistricting process, so please tune into the San Francisco Redistricting Task Force Meeting to hear updates and provide feedback.
The meeting will be remote via video conference. Please view the agenda and meeting links here.

Cliff House RFP is Open
The National Park Service has begun its search for a new long-term tenant in the historic Cliff House! One of my first pieces of legislation when I took office was urging the NPS to allow for a short-term tenant to open in the Cliff House while they started their search.
The request for proposals (RFP) for their long-term lease is open until May 17, 2022.
For more information, please visit the NPS website here.
