May is Small Business Month, and in San Francisco, we just celebrated Small Business Week last week. In the Richmond District we are lucky to have a wealth of small businesses that create the vibrant and welcoming neighborhood we love. To celebrate our small businesses, I have put together a list of some of my favorite places to shop, dine, and hang out in District 1!
For a great environmentally friendly spot, visit Kinship Salon for a great haircut and to learn more about their participation in Green Circle - 95% of their salon waste is repurposed or recycled! Check out Foggy Notion to pick up environmentally friendly goods, or Green Apple Books for a used, but new to you book, and of course, an honorable mention goes out to the SF Library!
Secrets (or not so secret) of the Richmond
We have so many unique places in the Richmond - some of my favorites are Butterfly Joint and Cafe a woodworking studio for all ages, Ocean Plant, a wonderul shop with plants and goods right across from Ocean Beach, and Love Street Vintage, for a beautifully curated vintage outfit.
Delicious Mexican Food
The Richmond has it's fair share of delicious Mexican restaurants, but my favorite spots to grab a taco and a margarita are Tommy's, Tia Margarita, Que Chulada, and of course the father and daugther duo of Chino's Taqueria, and Cielito Lindo!
If you haven't had a chance to grab some fresh pasta Pasta Supply Co. , what are you waiting for?
Now it's your turn. Where are you favorite places in our neighborhood. Send me your list at ChanStaff@sfgov.org and I'll see you there.
Health Updates & Resources
COVID-19
Now that the Mayor's Emergency Declaration has been lifted, many temporary COVID protections are being lifted as well. If you have any questions about this, please email ChanStaff@sfgov.org.
Our beloved Joe's Ice Cream owner, Sean Kim, graciously volunteered to be our District Representative at the San Francisco County Transit Authority Citizen Advisory Council (CTA CAC). I was honored to appoint Sean to the CTA CAC. Sean has been organizing and representing the interests of small business owners including business owners of color and immigrants on Geary Blvd. Sean will also bring another parent voice to the CAC, as his 3 kids and his family rely on public transportation to get around San Francisco.
Last week Sean was unanimously confirmed by the Board Of Supervisors. As part of the CAC, Sean will meet once a month and give recommendations on projects under the SFMTA purview. Congrats, Sean and than you for your dedication to the Richmond and our city!
Food Bank Pop-up Pantry
Great news! After discussion with the Rec and Parks Department, we were able to secure a new location for the SF/Marin Foodbank Pop-Up Pantry after their permit expires at the end of this month.
For the remainder of May, the pop-up food pantry will continue to operate on Mondays from 9am-1pm at the Golden Gate Park Senior Center at Fulton and Chain of Lakes. Starting on Monday, June 5, 2023, the food pantry will relocate to the Ocean Beach Parking Lot near Balboa Ave.
Geary Corridor Project
We recently met with the SFMTA Board President, Amanda Eaken on with Geary Blvd. Merchants Association to discuss the Geary Bus Rapid Transit to express our concerns about the quick build and the impact it would have on our community. We asked that the item not be agendized.
While the SFMTA Board agreed not to put the Quick Build on the May 16th agenda, it could still be agendized at a future meeting. Now it the time to contact SFMTA: MTABoard@SFMTA.com or 415.646.4470 and let them know your thoughts.
Earlier this month I stopped by Tia Margaritas to celebrate their 60th anniversary and bring a certificate of honor to Jenny, the owner and manager. Jenny took over the business from her aunt and mother in 2020 and has done a terrific job weathering the pandemic and continuing to serve delicious food and margaritas! Congratulations to the Tia Margarita family!

Proposed Golden Gate Park Concerts
Our office has received emails from constituents who are concerned about the Recreation and Park Department's proposal to hold ticketed concerts in Golden Gate Park for 3 years.
We encourage you to provide your input on the proposal to the Recreation and Park Commissioners, who will vote this Thursday, May 18th, whether to recommend the Board of Supervisors approve a permit for Another Planet Entertainment (APE) to hold ticketed concerts at the Golden Gate Park Polo Fields for three years starting in 2024.
The Rec Park Commission meets at 10 am and the proposal is #8 on the agenda. You can either attend the meeting in person, call in to give public comment.
Prop L Implementation
San Francisco voters in November 2022 approved Prop L, the Sales Tax for Transportation Projects measure that will direct $2.6 billion (2020 dollars) in half-cent sales tax funds over 30 years to help deliver safer, smoother streets, more reliable transit, continue paratransit services for seniors and persons with disabilities, reduce congestion, and improve air quality.
The Transportation Authority is working to implement Prop L, and is seeking feedback on the specific projects to fund in the next five years. To take a survey, attend a virtual town hall, or learn more, visit: sfcta.org/ExpenditurePlan.
