Living in the beautiful Richmond surrounded by Ocean Beach, the Presidio and Golden Gate Park, we understand why we must do all we can to care for our environment and keep our beaches and parks clean! In celebration of Earth Day, this weekend, I joined Assemblymember Phil Ting for his annual clean up day. So many neighbors joined us at North Lake in Golden Gate Park to restore the habitat and remove trash and debris. Thanks to all the volunteers for keeping Golden Gate Park and our Richmond clean.
LAFCo Panel
As Chair of the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo) I oversee the commission's work in advancing our work on CleanPowerSF and electricity services, public banking and municipal financial services, and municipal housing services. On Friday, in recognition of Earth Day, we hosted a panel discussion on "Climate Resilience through Green Banking and Municipal Housing".
On our first panel, we discussed our plans to create a public bank and a non-depository lending corporation, and how these entities can function as San Francisco’s Green Bank and access Inflation Reduction Act funding and other sources to finance renewable energy, building electrification, and other clean technology projects.
Our second panel explored the links between municipal housing initiatives and climate-related challenges, with a focus on affordability, sustainability, and equity. If you want to learn more about these panels or about LAFCo, send us an email - chanstaff@sfgov.org.
Community Updates
Celebrating Art Walk
This past weekend San Francisco Art Walk took over Balboa Street! It was great to see so many neighbors out enjoying the sunshine, student orchestra from AP Giannini Middle School, and amazing art!
Celebrating Mandalay restaurant
The City's oldest (and very delicious) Burmese restaurant, Mandalay, is a Richmond District staple and last month it was awarded a very much deserved James Beard Award! My team and I stopped by for an amazing lunch and to deliver the restaurant owners and chef a certificate of honor recognizing them for their contributions to our community and continuing the Richmond's legacy of the (I believe) best restaurants in they City!
Celebrating Pokémon!
Our Pokémon Spring Celebration was an amazing success! We had a prize wheel, Pokémon stickers, books, tattoos and cards and I loved seeing your kids (and some Pokémon adults too) light up when they got their prize! Big thanks to the Richmond District Library for your help making the day such a success and for all you do for our community!
Celebrating our Seniors
Last week I stopped by Self Help for the Elderly to meet with our seniors and talk about San Francisco's Department of Emergency Management new campaign to educate the community on how to respond to public safety concerns and when to call 911 versus when to call 311. The seniors were grateful for the information on how they can keep themselves safe!
Celebrating our Immigrants
I joined the San Francisco Immigrant Legal and Education Network for a rally for Immigrant Family Day and recognize the invaluable contributions immigrants bring to our community, the disparity of their needs, and how the city can better serve this community.
Celebrating Friends
Earlier this month, I participated in the Best Buddies Friendship Walk, joining with volunteers and participants to celebrate the Best Buddies program. Best Buddies has created a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, inclusive living, and family support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I was honored to speak about the importance of this program and walk with the amazing best buddies, even in the rain!
Celebrating Music
If you haven't had a chance to stop by Exploring Music's new musical parklet, the first in the city, stop by this weekend and check it out! Exploring Music has created a vibrant community space to play and listen to music for everyone. You can play their piano or rent other instruments directly from their store.
