It’s an honor to be celebrating AAPI heritage month as your District 1 Supervisor. The pandemic has been challenging for us, especially for our communities of color, and has further exposed the hate against our communities. We all must stand united against hate and together, and demand justice and safety for our communities. However, I also want us to stand united and celebrate our unique and diverse heritage. Let’s show everyone how proud we are just to be Asian American.

Small Business Week

During the month of May, support our small businesses by shopping local! To kick off the celebration, SF Flower Mart partnered with the Office of Economic Workforce and Development to install 13 floral butterflies across the city. Kinship Salon on Clement Street was host to a gorgeous butterfly crafted by Paul Robertson, who has a floral shop in the neighborhood at 200 Balboa. Be sure to stop by and get some flowers for Mother's Day!

COVID-19: Response + Updates

Neighborhood Pop-Up Vaccination Site

The Richmond Neighborhood Center and Department of Public Health have partnered to host a pop up vaccine site in the district! The pop up vaccination site will be at the Richmond Neighborhood Center (741 30th Ave) on Friday, May 7th between 9 am - 4:30 pm. Appointments are recommended as limited drop-ins are available. Thank You, Firefighters!

The work of our firefighters is essential and deeply appreciated. Last week I had the opportunity to join Chief Nicholson in meeting with our dedicated firefighters from all three of our Richmond District stations: Station 31, Station 14, and Station 34!

I also want to thank the San Francisco Fire Department for demonstrating the importance of hose tenders to protect the Richmond District in the event of a large fire or failure of our water supply system following an earthquake.

Community Walk with SFPD Richmond

Understanding the unique safety and security needs of our neighborhood serving stores is an essential part of our public safety work. Thank you to SFPD Commander Daryl Fong, Richmond Station Captain Caltagirone and the community liaisons for working closely with community partners including Clement Street Merchants, CYC and the Richmond Neighborhood Center to raise awareness about resources and support for neighborhood safety among our API communities.

I also want to extend a thank you to the Walgreens team for taking the time to connect with Captain Caltagirone and me, and we look forward to the continued conversations.

Slow Streets Feedback

Last week, SFMTA Director Amanda Eaken and I walked along the Slow Streets in District 1, and were joined by our Bicycle Advisory Committee and Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee representatives, Kristin Tieche and Jay Bain, along with SFMTA staff. Slow streets were implemented as SFMTA’s COVID-19 response to provide additional space for folks to socially distance while walking/ biking, and are serving a crucial role in helping our neighbors to make essential trips across neighborhoods during the declaration of the local emergency.

Our office is staying in close conversation with SFMTA regarding the Slow Streets program, and hope that you can also share your feedback through the questionnaire online.

Joe's Ice Cream Parklet

A Richmond District favorite and legacy business, Joe's Ice Cream, needs the community’s help building a Shared Space. Shared spaces are an opportunity for businesses to provide for more outdoor dining spaces and recover lost income due to the pandemic, but the construction and maintenance costs are expensive (see the SF Examiner article here).

Small business owners are calling for the city’s proposed legislation to make shared spaces permanent to be equitable and affordable for mom-and-pop businesses. Let the city know your thoughts on shared spaces in the survey here.

Community Events:

Public Meeting on JFK Drive

On May 11, the San Francisco Transportation Authority (SFCTA) will present the JFK Working Group Final Report, which describes the working group process and findings. The working group was formed in response to the road closure on JFK Drive from Kezar Drive to Transverse Drive allowing people to walk and bicycle while social distancing. The working group was comprised of residents, businesses, and public and community organizations who worked to identify ways to improve travel to, from, and within Golden Gate Park.

The Report documents a key contribution of the working group: a set of shared values and park access needs which the City commits to carry forward into their subsequent planning processes for Golden Gate Park and JFK Drive. Also included in the report is the Action Framework developed jointly by the San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency (SFMTA) and the Recreation and Parks Department to respond to the needs articulated by working group members, which identifies completed, short term, and long-term actions necessary to support improved access and experience for all in Golden Gate Park.

The values, needs, priority actions identified through this process will be used as inputs to an upcoming public process jointly led by the Recreation and Parks Department and the SFMTA. This upcoming process will develop and evaluate alternatives for JFK Drive operations.

This meeting will be the first hearing and approval action, before returning to the SFCTA Board on May 25 for final approval.

Golden Gate Frog Hop

The Richmond Neighborhood Center will be launching the Golden Gate Frog Hop: a virtual community fitness challenge and fundraiser! Lily the Frog, the challenge mascot, needs to traverse 2,900 miles cross-country to get back to her pond in Golden Gate Park. Participants will log their walking, running, hiking, biking, and any other exercise mileage from May 15-31, 2021 to reach a shared goal of 2,900 miles and bring Lily home from New York City!

Please register and recruit a few others to participate! People can join from anywhere, and mileage will be tracked through an app. This can be a way to have some friendly competition among family members and friends from afar! Please note that participants need to be 18+.

New Operator Facilities Coming Soon to California & 6th Ave

Due to the pandemic, Muni operators have lost access to many restaurants and building offices providing restroom facilities along their bus routes. Bathroom breaks are a human necessity and require advanced planning for our transit operators to ensure they minimize impacts to transit service.

As SFMTA begins to add more transit lines, the agency's Operator Task Force found a location on California and 6th Ave where they can install a standalone operator restroom that will service 4 Muni routes (1BX – currently suspended but will come back post-COVID, 28 Geary, 28R Geary, and 44 O’Shaughnessy).

Citywide Updates & Events:

SF Bike and Roll Week

City-wide Bike & Roll Week, organized by the SF Bicycle Coalition as part of the Safe Routes to School Partnership led by the SFMTA, will take place May 10 - 14, 2021. Bike & Roll Week is for students city-wide to celebrate getting around under their own power. Whether you’re on a bike, scooter, wheelchair, or skateboard, it’s healthy, green, and FUN. Walking counts too! K-12 students across SF are invited to participate, whether they’re back to in-person learning or still remote.

Elementary students can take part in daily activities exploring their five senses as they bike and roll, while middle and high school students can form teams to play the Bike & Roll Blowout, an app-based puzzle and creativity competition that teams can only win by getting out on wheels. There’s also an all-ages art contest and resources for P.E. teachers. Check out all the awesome activities and exciting prizes at sfbike.org/bikeandrollsf.

Congratulations to Richmond District resident and Meals on Wheels volunteer Mary Cerutti for being recognized in the organization’s newsletter for being an all-star volunteer! Mary volunteers her time helping bag thousands of pounds of produce for San Franciscans in need. Thank you, Mary, for your amazing volunteer work to keep our community fed!

Have Feedback on the COVID-19 Muni Temporary Service Plan?

SFMTA conducted a Title VI service equity analysis to evaluate the current COVID-19 Temporary Service Plan. The results of this analysis will be presented to the MTA Board of Directors on May 4.

You are invited to attend and provide comments on the current service plan at the online MTA Board of Directors (MTAB) meeting where the results of the service equity analysis will be presented at 1 p.m.

There will be a second online MTAB meeting on May 18 at 1 p.m. To provide comments during the meeting, specific dial-in instructions are located on the SFMTA calendar item for each date.

San Francisco Superior Court Seeks Applicants for 2021-2022 Civil Grand Jury

The San Francisco Superior Court is seeking volunteers for the Civil Grand Jury, the “watchdog” for the City and County of San Francisco. The Civil Grand Jury investigates the operations of City government, including officials, departments, and agencies. Each year, the Civil Grand Jury issues reports based on its findings. Those reports are heard before the Board of Supervisors.

The Civil Grand Jury will serve from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022. The application deadline is May 14, 2021. More information is available on the Civil Grand Jury website, https://civilgrandjury.sfgov.org/.
