I am pleased to announce that the San Francisco Police Department has responded to our call for expanding public safety resources to the Richmond! After requests and letters to the Mayor's Office and the Police Department and a rally with Richmond District Small Business owners and residents petitioning the administration and her police department to meet the needs of our district.
After our rally, we sat down with San Francisco Police Assistant Chief David Lazar and Richmond Station Captain Chris Canning. AC Lazar agreed to not only expand the hours of our current ambassadors assigned to Clement Street, but to deploy more ambassadors to the Central Geary corridor. Additionally, AC Lazar agreed to prioritize the Richmond District Police Station for lateral hires of police officers transferring from other jurisdictions, helping Captain Canning bring our station closer to full staffing.
Public Safety on Muni
Since the beginning of the pandemic, and even before we have heard from our seniors about their safety concerns while waiting for and riding on Muni. We have held hearings on the rise of hate related instances on our public transit systems. Just this month we heard about a high school student taking the bus from school in the Sunset to his home in the Richmond who was threatened with a taser and harassed with racial slurs. Disappointingly, the response from SFMTA and the Police Department was uncoordinated and left much to be desired.
Last year I introduced Richmond District Police Captain Chris Canning to our seniors at Self-Help Jackie Chan Center. In that meeting and in a public safety survey, the seniors expressed their concerns for their safety while waiting at bus stops and on the bus rides.
In a hearing I held last February, we learned that our Senior Escort Program is effective in supporting our seniors getting around, including waiting at bus stops and riding transit, but there is more work to do to protect all our residents.
While we often experience understaffing, SFPD and SFMTA must continue strategic coordination for SFPD to patrol bus stops and ride along, and for SFMTA to improve safety protocols, on the bus to ensure the safety of our residents and transit operators and prevent incidents like this from happening. As Budget Committee Chair, I will be evaluating the Mayor's Proposed Budget to make sure SFMTA has the funding and resources to get this done. Crime prevention is key to keeping our community safe.

Celebrating AAPI Heritage in Washington DC
Last week I was honored to attend Vice President Kamala Harris’ Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration and night market at her residence. It was an especially symbolic night as we celebrated and recognized our achievements with our nation's first Asian Vice President.
While in DC, I joined assemblymember Phil Ting and the California legislative AAPI delegation to meet with our congressional leaders to advocate for San Francisco.
We discussed the pending budget deficit and the need to continue federal funding for our city. And, on the auspicious 125th anniversary of Chinese Hospital this week, I also made sure to include the need to advocate for the expansion of funding to allow Chinese Hospital to receive reimbursements from Medicare so they can further serve San Francisco.
As the only AAPI member of the Board of Supervisors, I am proud to represent our AAPI minority majority. It was wonderful to meet with other leaders from across our country, but it is clear that we have a lot to work to do. As Vice President Harris says, you may not be the first, but make sure you are not the last.
Celebrating AAPI Heritage in the Richmond
Back home, I was honored to join One Richmond and Exploring Music for a celebration of AAPI Heritage Month in the Inner Richmond where our community came together to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Richmond District AAPI community through live performances, art activities, community resources and giveaways. It was wonderful to see so many neighbors and so many talented performers!
Mental Health Awareness Month
May is also mental health awareness month. Last week, I held a Chinese Media roundtable with Angela Tang, President and Chief Executive Officer, and Christina Shea, Chief Clinical Officer, from the Richmond Area Multi-Services (RAMS). RAMS is a non-profit mental health organization committed to advocating for and providing community-based, culturally competent, and consumer-guided comprehensive services. We discussed the stigma of talking about mental health issues, specifically in immigrant communities and how we can better serve people. If you or a loved one are in need of services, please reach out and ask for help.
Western Neighborhood Project 25th Anniversary
What a fun night celebrating the Western Neighborhood Project's (WNP) 25th anniversary! WNP does an amazing job preserving and sharing the history and culture of the neighborhoods in western San Francisco.
Thank you Jayme!
Last week we honored our amazing intern, Jayme for her exceptional dedication and hard work. Her family, who was here to celebrate her graduation from USF, joined us! Jayme has been helping out in the District 1 office for the past year while she attended college. Her proactive outreach and engagement has helped to foster community bonds in the neighborhood. She has a profound passion for social justice and I know she will do much good in this world. Congratulations on your graduation and thank you for your commitment and outstanding service!
