This past month, I have been fully immersed in our City’s budget process. Last week, as Chair of the Budget Committee, I presided over the first of the Departmental Budget Hearings to understand how the Mayor’s proposed budget would impact the City’s departments and their ability to provide critical city services. This week, we had all departments return for further negotiations to create a budget that works for all San Franciscans.
San Francisco is facing an unprecedented budget deficit and a public health crisis on our streets. As Budget chair, I aim to bring accountability and transparency to our city spending, to refocus our efforts on providing quality and timely city services, and deliver a San Francisco budget that allows all San Franciscans to thrive. You can watch the budget hearings in person at the Board Chamber, online at SFGovTv, or local channel 26. On Monday, June 26, we will have public comment day where you are welcome to make your opinion known on any part of the budget. We will return next Wednesday, June 28th for final deliberations.
I was honored to join the Chinese Historical Society of America and the Western Neighborhoods Project for the launch of the Chinese in the Richmond Exhibit at One Richmond.
This beautiful story telling exhibit was a powerful reminder of the Richmond District's history as one of the first areas outside of Chinatown that allowed Chinese residents to own property and thrive. You can find out more about Chinese in the Richmond on the CHSA website.
Emanu-El NEXT
I am so happy to have joined the leadership at Congregation Emanu-El earlier this month for the groundbreaking ceremony of Emanu-El Next, a newly reimagined version of the congregation to meet our modern community. I look forward to seeing and meeting in the beautiful new space!
Kung Fu Day
Earlier this month, I joined the Chinese Historical Society, the Chinatown History & Culture Association, and others to celebrate Kung Fu Day! What a wonderful celebration of Chinatown’s small businesses, deep history, and live culture, as well as the cultural significance and impact of kung fu or Chinese martial arts.
Community Updates
SFPUC Night Work
We received notice from the SFPUC that there is a Sewer Upgrade Project at 23rd between Anza and Balboa. This project will have two phases and the work will be 24 hours. Please see the flyer below for more information.
D1 Mobility Study
We are at the end of the first round of outreach for our District 1 Transportation Study through the SF County Transportation Authority. The goal of the study is to gather residents' feedback on improving our public transit and pedestrian and cyclist connectivity and safety, and recommend a few projects that can begin be implemented in the near term.
You can fill out the survey in English, Chinese, Spanish or Russian on the website above. The survey will close on Monday, June 26th. The next step will be to analyze the study and present recommendations to the community for further feedback in the fall.
Park Presidio HOV Lanes
SFMTA is seeking your opinion on the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes on Park Presidio and Lombard.
Take the survey and make sure your opinion is heard.
With the construction at 4200 Geary underway, the TNDC is asking for your input or design for a mural at the 100% afforable senior housing development. See the flyer below for information on how to participate.
Traffic Calming Application
Did you know the SFMTA has a residential application-based traffic calming program where residents can request traffic calming for their block?
If you want to learn more about the program, visit SFMTA website to learn more about the application and evaluation processes.
Starting July 1, 2023, traffic calming applications will be accepted and evaluated on a rolling quarterly basis, which should result in as much as a two-year decrease in time from application to construction compared to the previous process. Please reach out to my office or email TrafficCalmingApp@sfmta.com for more information.
SF Housing Inventory
The San Francisco Rent Board has asked that I remind you all about the requirements under a new San Francisco law to better understand our housing inventory.
Beginning last year, all property owners are required to provide certain information to the Rent Board about their residential properties each year. The reporting requirements apply to all residential units in San Francisco, including single-family homes, vacant units, and owner-occupied units.
This reporting was due in March, and should be filled out as soon as possible if you have not yet completed the form.
