Over the past year (and more), we have been working with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) to advance a number of transit and traffic safety benefits for the Richmond District, with the goal of creating a safer and more accessible neighborhood for everyone. Now, we are finally seeing some of these improvements. Read below for the latest updates.
Parking and Parklets on Clement
The District 1 office has been working on reimagining inner Clement Street to better utilize the 2-Clement bus stops. Since the onset of the pandemic, our segment of the 2-Clement has not been operational and SFMTA has not identified funding for it in the future. Given the large amount of space taken up by these bus stops we asked SFMTA to do more to support the neighborhood corridor. We helped connect with merchants and residents to better understand how to best utilize this space. We have created a plan based on this outreach to convert the 2 Clement bus stops into parking and public spaces, adding over 30 new parking spaces, bike corrals for safer bicycle parking, and space for more parklets as requested by merchants. This plan must now be approved by SFMTA later this fall. If approved, these changes will take place in early 2025.
Sample of proposed changes at Clement between 7th Avenue and 9th Avenue
Tour Buses Banned on 8th Avenue
Earlier this month the SFMTA Board of Directors voted to amend the Transportation Code to restrict commercial tour buses on 8th Avenue between Cabrillo and Fulton Streets. SFMTA will notify the tour bus companies of this change and install new signage in the area. The high traffic on this block of 8th Avenue, including Safeway's loading dock and multiple bus lines (44 O'Shaughnessy, 5 Fulton, and the 21 Hayes), was exacerbated by the tour buses which added additional noise and congestion. This change came after neighbors reached out to our office and asked for help mitigating this problem.
Rapid Flashing Beacon on Geary
In December 2020, before I was sworn in as your Supervisor, a tragic accident at 38th and Geary took the life of Lawrence "Larry" Holman. Since then I have been pushing the SFMTA to install a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) at the intersection. Finally, this week, the RRFB which includes a pedestrian push button, flashing lights, and better signage will be activated allowing pedestrians to safely cross Geary at 38th. It is terrible that it took a tragedy to add this safety precaution, and more frustrating that it took the department almost four years to finally install the beacon, but hopefully this installation will prevent future tragedies.
New Stop Signs on Clement
After receiving neighbor entreaties, we requested that SFMTA install stop signs along Clement to prevent future collisions. New stop signs will be placed at Clement and 24th and at Clement and 26th. This will create two new four-way stops at these two intersections and insure safer crossings for pedestrians and motorists along Clement.
Community Updates
Heart of the Richmond Night Market
It was a drizzly Richmond day at our third Heart of the Richmond Night Market, but that didn't dampen our spirits. We had a wonderful time meeting neighbors, shopping at the local vendors, eating delicious food, watching the amazing performances, and doing a backpack giveaway for back to school! Our next Night Market is set for Saturday, September 21st. Hope to see you out there!
CYC Richmond District Community Hub
The CYC Richmond District Community Hub is finally open! For over 30 years CYC has served the Richmond District and I am grateful for CYC’s partnership with our office and city departments. Together we provide invaluable services to our youth, with cultural and linguistic competency, empowering them to achieve their goals and give back to our community. The Community Hub will provide a safe and welcoming space to expand CYC programming and continue uplifting our youth, supporting our seniors, and strengthening the Richmond District.
Community Events
Supporting our Seniors
Last Wednesday was National Senior Citizen Appreciation Day. We enjoyed visiting with our Richmond District senior residents at the Richmond Senior Center and Self Help for the Elderly. In Chinese, we have a saying, when you have an elder living in your home, you have a treasure. Our seniors are the backbone of our community, and bring so much knowledge and love to those around them. One of the ways we can help them age with dignity is to create spaces designed for their benefit. We are partnering with the Recreation and Parks Department to create a senior "playground" in the open space next to the Golden Gate Park Senior Center.
This playground is in the planning stages and we need the input of our seniors and their family members. Please fill out the survey in English | Chinese | Filipino | Russian | or Spanish, due by September 15th and then stay tuned details on a community meeting to discuss the survey results.
District 1 Youth Townhall
This Thursday the District 1 Office will be hosting a youth townhall, planned and organized by our office interns to create a space for our younger residents to share their ideas and concerns. If you are a student or know a student who would like to participate, sign up below!
Bat Movie Benefit
Enjoy some witchy music and learn about bats and conservation science while supporting the upcoming documentary "The Invisible Mammal", a film by Richmond resident Kristin Tieche. Click on the picture to register for the event.
