Earlier today I met with Superintendent Matt Wayne to discuss the impact their Resource Alignment Initiative will have on the Richmond District and was informed that Sutro Elementary School is one of the schools identified for closure. I am disappointed to learn of this news because, as many of you know, Sutro Elementary is a critical part of the Richmond Distrcit and serves Richmond families, including Cantonese speaking students and their families.
During our meeting, Superintendent Wayne has committed to:
Guaranteed placement for Sutro Elementary students in a Richmond District Neighborhood School, either Alamo Elementary or Lafayette Elementary.
Guaranteed placement for Sutro Elementary monolingual Cantonese speaking students at Chinese DeAvila Elementary.
A new early education site at the Sutro Elementary School campus for pre-k and t-k students.
This is not the news I wanted to share with you, however, this is only a proposal. We will have an opportunity to come together as a community to show why Sutro is a vital part of the Richmond that has been providing quality education to our students.
The school district will hold online town hall meetings as well as an in-person meeting at Sutro Elementary over the next few weeks where our students, famillies, and community will be invited to give feedback on the proposed closures and mergers. The first meeting will be held this Thursday, October 10th at 5:30pm. The District is still working out the details, but we will share the registration information as soon as we have it. It will be critical to support the Sutro community by turning out, regardless of which school your children attend.
School closures must be a last resort - we must explore all other options first. I am still committed to the resolution we introduced and passed unanimously last week, urging Superintendent Wayne to reevaluate his plan. We must first fix the payroll system, pass the $790 million school bond to improve school sites and work with the State to balance the budget.
I also want to urge all our community members to stay engaged even if your school is not impacted at this time.
