This week I attended the Sutro Elementary School community meeting with Superintendent Matt Wayne where the Superintendent was to answer questions directly from students, families and concerned community members about the proposed plan to close Sutro. I was inspired by the hundreds of families who showed up to the meeting, including families from other schools across the City. I was moved by the stories shared by the Sutro community, current and former Sutro students who love their school, parents unsure why Sutro was chosen and worried about how the closure will impact their children, and amazing educators who love their jobs and their students. But unfortunately, we all left the meeting with more questions than answers.
Today the San Francisco Board of Education is holding an emergency meeting to vote to accept the resignation of Superintendent Matt Wayne. No matter City management or School District management, we expect all leaders to devote themselves to serving San Francisco. Clearly the Superintendent has indicated that he can no longer continue and I respect his decision. But one person's resignation does not solve the problems SFUSD is facing. I will continue to support our school district, getting through this tough time, to balance its budget without school closures.
On Tuesday, October 29th, the Board of Supervisors will hold a hearing to demand answers from the School District. I will continue to stand with the Sutro community and the families across the city, to fight to ensure our schools remain open. Because, as we all know, closing schools will not solve the District's budget crisis, but it will tear our communities apart. The hearing on Tuesday, October 29th, is open to the public, if you'd like to attend in person, come to City Hall, Room 250 at 3pm. Otherwise you can watch the hearing online at SFGovTV.org.
Community Updates
New Speed Limit on Fulton Street
Yesterday the new 25 MPH speed limit signs were installed on Fulton Street! This is the first of many improvements coming to transform safety on the Fulton corridor. Next week, construction will begin to make the bulb outs along Fulton permanent, making crossing Fulton safer and slowing turning vehicles.
The Fulton Street Safety Project is a partnership made possible through our work with the community and San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, and thanks to Assemblymember Phil Ting who secured an additional $1.6 million from the state budget.
Early next year, speed cameras will be installed along Fulton to help enforce the new speed limit. We know that speed is the number one factor in traffic fatalities, and we hope this new slower speed limit along with our other safety features will prevent future tragedies.
Celebrating the Richmond Area Multi-Services Inc.
Last week we celebrated the groundbreaking of the Richmond Area Multi-Services (RAMS) Inc. new building on the corner of Clement Street and 7th Avenue! RAMS provides critical support to the most vulnerable in our community, creating access to cultural and linguistically appropriate mental health and wellness services especially for AAPI Seniors, many of whom are monolingual.
This new building, purchased thanks to our advocacy and with a grant from Assemblymember Phil Ting, will house RAMS' outpatient counseling services, wellness centers program, and the training institute, which includes the highly acclaimed National Asian American Psychology Training Center for doctoral internships in clinical psychology and is scheduled to open in Spring 2025!
Richmond District Ping Pong Tournament
Last week we held our Richmond District Ping Pong Tournament at the Richmond Rec Center. It was a very fun filled day with some seriously awesome ping pong players. Congratulations to the winners and all the teams!!! The tournament used the two new ping pong tables funded by the Golden Gate Community Benefit Fund we negotiated from Another Planet Entertainment. It's wonderful to see the direct results of reinvesting in our community!
