If you haven't yet heard, the Richmond was named one of Time Out Magazine's 40 coolest neighborhoods in the WORLD! But for us, this is no big surprise. We are the coolest! Read on for more about some of our residents, businesses, and events.
Rize Up Bakery
This week Rize Up Bakery, which operates a commercial kitchen out of the SOMA, was the victim of a burglary. In February of this year, I honored Azikiwee Anderson, owner of Rize Up, in celebration of Black History Month for his work to protect the food insecure in our community.
While his retail space is not based in the Richmond, Azikiwee is a Richmond District resident who launched Rize Up during the pandemic, as a way to channel his pain in the wake of the murder of George Floyd into something healing. He began baking his delicious sourdough bread out of his home, selling at the Clement Street Farmers Market and retail stores before outgrowing his backyard ovens and opening his kitchen in SOMA.
Rize Up was burglarized yesterday in the early morning resulting in the loss of over $20,000 in goods and damages.
As the Holidays approach and you're looking for a unique Richmond District gifts, consider Ocean Beach Cafe, the non-alcoholic café, bar, bottle shop, and private event space in the Outer Richmond. The owner, Joshua James, who we honored last year for Native American Heritage Month, is an amazing community partner and amazing mixologist. Stop by for a bite to eat and a delicious mocktail, or pick up something from the bottle shop for a holiday party.
Welcome to the Hood
Iggy's Place
Richmond resident Igor “Iggy” Teplitsky has brought his popular food truck, Borsch Mobile to the Cassava Wine Bar space for breakfast and lunch!
Check out Iggy's Place, operating Monday- Friday 10:00am - 3:30pm and Saturday 10:00am - 5:00pm and serving their delicious sandwiches and dishes based on Iggy's Ukrainian roots. Don't worry - Cassava is still operating their regular hours 4:30pm - 9:30pm Wednesday - Friday!
Oodle Yunnan Rice Noodle
Also recently opened on Balboa (3420 Balboa) is a new Noodle Shop, Oodle Yunnan Rice Noodle! Their specialty is "serving silky rice noodles, tender meat, and fresh vegetables in a 12 hours+ slow-cooked house-made broth made from chicken, pork bone, and Yunnan ham"!
I visited with them last week during Balbooa, but I can't wait to go back and eat there - they are open every day from 11:00am - 8:00pm.
Community Events
UCSF Potential Acquisition of St. Mary's Hospital
Last night my team attended the first of many community meetings to discuss UCSF's potential acquisition of St. Mary's and St. Francis hospitals. UCSF is currently negotiating a deal to purchase both hospitals and fold them into the UCSF healthcare system. The negotiations are anticipated to be complete by the end of the year.
UCSF has made clear their intentions to keep both hospitals open during the transition and maintain staffing and care throughout. If you would like to participate in future community meetings, you can join online tonight at 6pm: tiny.ucsf.edu/4ieaHq, or sign up for future updates here https://www.ucsf.edu/cgr/signup or ask questions directly by emailing community@cgr.ucsf.edu.
