is a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing District 6 (Tenderloin, Civic Center, Mid-Market, SOMA, Yerba Buena, Rincon Hill, South Beach, Mission Bay, Treasure Island).

Supervisor Haney is a past Commissioner and past President and Vice President of the San Francisco Board of Education. He was elected to the Board of Education in 2012, and re-elected in 2016. In 2016, Barack Obama endorsed Supervisor Haney’s successful re-election race for School Board making him the only local San Francisco elected official to ever receive that honor.

As President of the Board of Education, Haney was known for tackling some of the city’s biggest challenges with creative solutions. He led initiatives to build affordable housing for teachers and protect them from evictions, launch a new school in Mission Bay, secure housing and expand services for homeless students, and ensure all our kids have access to computer science and technology.  He passed landmark policies to better support undocumented students, students with incarcerated parents, and unaccompanied minors.  He is also the author of the transformative “Safe and Supportive Schools” policy to end unnecessary school suspensions and expulsions, and authored a policy to move past the broken student assignment system.

While Haney was President of the Board, San Francisco public schools saw some of their highest graduation and college going rates ever. He is the only school board member to have visited all 113 public K-12 schools in San Francisco.

Supervisor Haney is former National Political Director at The Dream Corps, where he led the organization’s broader policy strategy to close prison doors, and open doors of opportunity. With Van Jones and Jessica Jackson, he is the Co-Founder of #cut50, a national organization with the goal to end mass incarceration with smarter solutions to keep communities safe. #cut50 was the lead proponent of the “First Step Act,” the most transformational criminal justice reform legislation in decades.

Supervisor Haney is a former Adjunct Faculty Member at the Stanford Design School. He also taught Education Law at the JFK School of Law, and Sociology at Palo Alto University. Haney is the former Executive Director of the UC Student Association, where he led advocacy and outreach on behalf of the 200,000+ UC students across the state. Haney regularly represents tenants as an eviction defense attorney.

Supervisor Haney has a BA from UC Berkeley, where he graduated with highest honors and as a Valedictorian finalist, an MA from Stanford University School of Education, a JD from Stanford Law School, and an LLM in Human Rights from National University of Ireland where he was a Senator George Mitchell Scholar.

As Supervisor, Haney is committed to addressing the most pressing issues facing our neighborhoods:  homelessness, dirty streets and sidewalks, crime, and economic inequality.
