MESSAGE FROM SUPERVISOR STEPHEN SHERRILL
Friends,
Since joining the Board, I have been overwhelmed by the drive and dedication of District 2 residents to move this city forward. We all love San Francisco, and we know it’s not where it should be—but there’s no doubt in my mind that we are rising. I will stop at nothing to keep that momentum going.
And I need your help to do it. You are my #1 priority, and I want to hear from you.
How? You can…
- Respond to this email
- Submit a question to the D2 Question Box
- Host a meet-and-greet—I’d love to meet you and your neighbors!
- Join our Public Safety Town Hall on March 6th – RSVP HERE
Need a speed bump? Have thoughts on a slow street? Want to put on a block party? I’ll help you navigate the process and make sure your neighbors are involved too. If you see me around, please say hi—I want to hear from you.
Here’s what’s on my mind:
Trump’s Presidio announcement is full of hot air—your homes and businesses are not at risk. But the Presidio Trust board may see some turnover, and we need to make sure the Presidio’s success and importance are recognized far beyond just those of us who enjoy it every day.
Public safety remains a concern even though crime stats are at all-time lows. What does this mean? It means that those who are struggling the most—small businesses, the elderly, and victims of domestic violence—are still extremely vulnerable.
We should be paying special attention to the Mayor’s Office of Victim Rights (MOVR) and their partners, who last year alone responded to over 13,000 calls for help. At the same time, our Special Victims Unit (SVU) has only 25 officers—down from 70 twenty years ago. These numbers don’t add up, and we need to do more.
But there is good news: the Police Commission is changing for the better. Last month, the Board approved Wilson Leung’s appointment, and this week we confirmed the removal of Max Carter-Oberstone. As Vice Chair of the Rules Committee, I am committed to ensuring that the Police Commission prioritizes safe streets—not political dysfunction. I am also thrilled to support the Mayor’s pick of Mattie Scott as an appointee to the Commission. She is a fearless advocate and I can not wait work with her.
I am aggressively focused on reducing barriers for small businesses. The City makes it too hard for businesses to open, expand, and succeed. I introduced the first two of many bills to cut through the red tape—one to allow formula retail to fill vacant storefronts on Van Ness, and another to let corner-lot businesses have signs on both streets. These are small but meaningful changes that will help our commercial corridors thrive.
We are not waiting for City departments to clean up our streets on their own—we are taking action. My office has put together a priority list of individuals struggling on the street, and we are working to accelerate getting them the services and shelter they need. This is good for all San Franciscans.
In this newsletter, I’ll also be addressing two major concerns I’ve heard from you:
- Jefferson Square Park and our urgent work with SFPD and city agencies to restore safety.
- The Walgreens closures and what we’re doing to ensure continued access to prescriptions and prevent vacancies.
I’ll keep working every day to make District 2 a place where residents and businesses can thrive. Let’s keep pushing forward together.
Sincerely, |
Stephen Sherrill
District 2 Supervisor

Defending the Presidio: My office introduced a resolution opposing President Trump’s executive order targeting the Presidio Trust. The Presidio is one of San Francisco’s most cherished public spaces, serving millions of visitors while operating as a financially self-sufficient model of government efficiency. This executive order is nothing more than political theater, creating unnecessary fear for the thousands of residents and businesses in the park. San Francisco will not stand by while the Presidio is threatened—we are committed to protecting this landmark for generations to come.
Helping Small Businesses Thrive with Better Signage: My office is working to make it easier for small businesses to attract customers and stay competitive. I introduced legislation to allow businesses on corner lots to install two projecting signs on their street-facing facades so that shops can be more visible to pedestrians and drivers. This is a simple fix that removes unnecessary red tape and invites more economic activity to our commercial corridors. Stronger local businesses mean a stronger San Francisco, and I’m committed to making sure they have the tools they need to succeed.
Supporting Affordable Housing at the Normandy Apartments – I joined Mayor Lurie in introducing a resolution to support the acquisition of 108 permanently affordable homes at the Normandy Apartments. Managed by the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, this project is one of the most cost-efficient affordable housing acquisitions in San Francisco and ensures these units remain available to low- and moderate-income households. Preserving existing housing and expanding affordability is essential, and I’m proud to support efforts that make District 2 accessible for all.
Standing Against Human Trafficking and Forced Labor – My office introduced a resolution in support of Assembly Bill 381, authored by Assemblymember Catherine Stefani, to strengthen California’s procurement policies against human trafficking and forced labor. This bill ensures government contractors and subcontractors certify compliance with anti-trafficking laws and take action when violations occur. California has fallen behind on these protections, and it’s time we catch up. I’m proud to support this effort to hold businesses accountable and ensure ethical labor practices in state contracts.
Honoring Captain Jason Sawyer: The Board of Supervisors officially declared February 14, 2025, as Captain Jason Sawyer Day in recognition of his 28 years of service with the San Francisco Police Department. From serving on the SFPD Tactical Unit to leading Northern Station, Captain Sawyer has been a dedicated public servant, strengthening community relationships and keeping our neighborhoods safe. Wishing him all the best in his well-earned retirement! |

A quick note to the community:
I know that two big concerns in our community right now are the Walgreens closures and the issues at Jefferson Square Park. I want to take a moment to address both.
First, the Walgreens closures—I hear you. These stores aren’t just retail spaces; they are where many of us pick up prescriptions and essentials. My office is working directly with Walgreens to make sure residents still have clear and accessible options for their medications. But I’m also focused on what happens next. We can’t let these storefronts sit vacant and become blights on our neighborhood. I’m already in touch with property owners to push for new tenants and ensure these spaces don’t stay empty for long.
Second, Jefferson Square Park—Although our attempts to make San Francisco’s streets safer and drug-free are ongoing, we wanted to share a recent development.
After an operation that occurred on 2/26/2025 in Jefferson Square Park, San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) made 86 arrests of drug dealers and users. The park has been cleared, thanks to the efforts of:
- San Francisco Police Department
- San Francisco Sheriff’s Office
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
- National Guard
- San Francisco Rec and Park Rangers
- Department of Public Works
- San Francisco Fire Department
- Animal Care and Control (ACC)
Going forward, my office is working on a number of ways to ensure the safety of residents in and around the park. I want to make clear that drug dealing is not tolerated in San Francisco.
I’m working closely with SFPD, the Healthy Streets Operations Center, and Supervisor Mahmood’s office to implement both immediate safety measures and long-term solutions. You can read more about these updates through the articles on the SF Standard and the SF Chronicle.
I want you to know that I take these issues seriously, and my office is actively working on them every day. As always, I want to hear from you—your concerns, your ideas, and what’s on your mind. I’ll keep fighting to make sure District 2 remains a place where we can all live, work, and thrive.
