Our Richmond District commercial corridors, Balboa Street, Clement Street and Geary Boulevard are the backbone of our district and the home of so many amazing businesses, including legacy businesses like Green Apple Books, Joe's Ice Cream, Toy Boat, Cinderella Bakery and so many more. But across the city we are seeing entire city blocks being purchased and small businesses being displaced.
We must do more to protect our small businesses. This week the Board of Supervisors passed our legislation to protect legacy businesses from being displaced by property owners. This legislation creates protections for legacy businesses by mandating that property owners must get additional review before they can displace a legacy business. This is an interim measure will give us time to study and create permanent legislation to protect our small businesses.
To become designated as a legacy business, you must have been in operation for 30 or more years, and be nominated by your district supervisor or the Mayor. Let us know if you want to nominate yourself or a business in the Richmond! You can learn more about the legacy business program here.

Hearing on School Closures
The Richmond District community was instrumental in helping to shut down the school closure plan! The day after the Sutro Elementary School Town Hall Superintendent Matt Wayne submitted his resignation. I have to believe this was not a coincidence. The Sutro Elementary School community came out in force and proved why they, and schools across the city, should not close. And now the new interim Superintendent Maria Su has announced her plan to halt school closures.
But we must stay vigilant. I am committed to supporting our school district through this tough time, to balance its budget without school closures. On Tuesday, October 29, the Board of Supervisors will hold a hearing on the Resource Alignment Initiative to understand the next steps for the School District.
No matter City management or School District management, we expect all leaders to devote themselves to serving San Francisco. I know Dr. Maria Su to be one of the city leaders who has devoted herself serving children, youth and our families. I have confidence that with her guidance, we will regain the public’s trust and move our School District in a better direction.
The hearing on Tuesday, October 29th, is open to the public and will provide an opportunity for public comment. If you'd like to attend in person, come to City Hall, Room 250 at 3:00pm. Otherwise you can watch the hearing online at SFGovTV.org.
